Magelang, Borobudur TempleBorobudur, an ancient temple built in between A.D. 780 and 840 during the reign of the Syailendra dynasty is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Once neglected for over 10 centuries before discovered in 1870 by Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles. The magnificent Borobudur takes pride as the world's biggest Buddhist temple, taking 2,500m2 in total area size and 35.4 meters in height.
Borobudur architecture is one of a kind, as it was built without blocks of cement and mortars, just a pile of carved stones piled on top of each other, and formed into great relief panels. There are 2,672 relief panels and originally 504 Buddha statues in this temple telling stories about the life of Buddha. |
